The best AI running coach for Suunto watches

Suunto Coach is free and getting smarter. Here's what an AI coach adds on top, which apps really send workouts to a Suunto watch, and how Ranner turns each session into a SuuntoPlus guide.

Updated Roberto Kalinovskyy, founder of Ranner

Suunto has always been the adventurer's watch, and its own coaching has improved a lot recently. Here's what you get for free, what an AI coach adds on top, and which apps actually put sessions on a Suunto. We make Ranner, so read our part with that in mind.

What Suunto already gives you for free

  • Suunto Coach, in the Suunto app. Since August 2025 it can build AI-generated plans, still in beta, that sync to your watch.
  • Recovery state, which combines HRV, sleep, how you feel and your recent training.
  • SuuntoPlus guides, which let apps put step-by-step workouts on the watch.

What Suunto Coach doesn't give you is a conversation. You can't ask it why, or tell it about next week's trip.

  • Ranner: an AI coach you chat with, sending each session to your Suunto as a SuuntoPlus guide.
  • Suunto Coach: free, built in and recovery-aware, but you can't talk to it.
  • Runna: sends structured plans to Suunto as SuuntoPlus guides, but has no chat.
  • Coach Leo: a chat coach that also sends sessions to Suunto, in English and French.
  • Running Genie and TrainAsONE: read your Suunto runs, but don't send workouts to the watch.

How Ranner works with Suunto

  1. Connect once. In the Ranner app, connect Suunto from the integrations screen.
  2. Your runs and recovery come in. Activities and recovery data from the Suunto app reach Ranner automatically.
  3. Your plan is built in a chat. Tell the coach what you're training for and it writes structured sessions.
  4. Sessions arrive as SuuntoPlus guides. Before a run, choose today's guide on the watch and it takes you through every step with its target.
  5. The plan adapts. Sleep badly or tell the coach you're sore, and the day changes.

Tips for Suunto runners

  • Sync before you head out so today's guide is on the watch.
  • Follow one plan at a time. If you train with Ranner, don't run a Suunto Coach plan as well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI running coach for Suunto?

Suunto Coach is free in the Suunto app and now builds AI plans in beta, guided by a recovery state based on HRV and sleep. If you want a coach you can talk to that sends every session to your Suunto, Ranner and Coach Leo both do that. Runna sends structured plans to Suunto but has no chat.

How do Ranner workouts appear on a Suunto watch?

Ranner sends each session as a SuuntoPlus guide. On the watch you choose the guide before you start the run, and it walks you through warm-up, intervals and cool-down with your targets.

Which Suunto watches work with Ranner?

Any Suunto that syncs with the Suunto app sends its runs to Ranner. To receive workouts, the watch needs to support SuuntoPlus guides, as current models such as the Race, Vertical, Ocean and 9 Peak do.

Is Suunto Coach free?

As far as we can tell, yes: Suunto Coach comes with the Suunto app and Suunto doesn't list a price for it.
