The best AI running coach for Apple Watch

Apple's new Readiness score tells you how ready you are, but it won't give you a training plan. Here's which apps turn your Apple Watch data into a plan, which ones put workouts on the watch, and how Ranner does it.

Updated Roberto Kalinovskyy, founder of Ranner

The Apple Watch is a great running watch that has never come with a training plan. In September 2026 Apple announced a daily Readiness score for watchOS 27, so your watch will tell you how ready you are, but it still won't tell you what to run. That's the gap coaching apps fill. We make Ranner, which is one of them, so keep that in mind.

What Apple gives you for free

  • Custom workouts. Build intervals with pace or heart-rate targets yourself and run them from the Workout app.
  • Workout Buddy. Spoken encouragement and stats during workouts, on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence.
  • Readiness, announced for watchOS 27. A daily score from 0 to 10 based on your activity, vitals and sleep.

All useful, but nobody decides what your week should look like, or changes it when you're tired.

  • Ranner: an AI coach you chat with. It reads your Apple Health data and sends each session to Apple's Workout app on your watch.
  • Runna: a polished structured plan with its own Apple Watch app, but no chat and no sleep or HRV adaptation.
  • Running Genie: a chat coach that reads sleep, resting heart rate and HRV from Apple Health, but doesn't send workouts to the watch.
  • Coach Leo: a chat coach that reads Apple Health, but doesn't send workouts to the watch.
  • TrainAsONE: Apple Watch support is on its roadmap.

How Ranner works with Apple Watch

  1. Connect Apple Health in the Ranner app on your iPhone (iOS 17 or later).
  2. Your data comes in. Runs, heart rate, HRV, resting heart rate and sleep from your watch reach Ranner through Apple Health.
  3. Your plan is built in a chat. Tell the coach your goal and your week.
  4. Sessions go to the Workout app. Send one session or the whole week, and the workouts appear in the Workout app on your watch with warm-up, intervals and targets. You can also have them sent automatically.
  5. The run comes back by itself. When you finish, Apple Health passes the run to Ranner, and the coach reviews it and plans what's next.

Because Ranner uses Apple's Workout app rather than a watch app of its own, you get Apple's full tracking (GPS, heart rate, running metrics) and one less app to worry about. The trade-off is that there's no Ranner screen on your wrist, and there Runna's dedicated watch app is more polished.

Tips for Apple Watch runners

  • Wear it to bed, at least a few nights a week, so the coach gets your sleep and overnight HRV.
  • Charge it before bed or first thing in the morning. A run your watch didn't record is a run the coach never sees.
  • Start runs from the Workout app as usual. Ranner picks them up from Apple Health.

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Watch have a running coach?

Not one that plans your training. The Apple Watch lets you build custom workouts, Workout Buddy gives spoken encouragement during workouts, and watchOS 27 adds a daily Readiness score. None of them builds or adjusts a training plan for you. For that you need an app like Ranner or Runna.

Which running coach apps put workouts on the Apple Watch?

Ranner and Runna both put structured workouts on the Apple Watch. Runna has its own watch app, while Ranner sends sessions into Apple's built-in Workout app. Running Genie and Coach Leo read your data from Apple Health but don't send workouts to the watch.

What do I need to use Ranner with an Apple Watch?

An iPhone with iOS 17 or later, with Apple Health connected to Ranner. Your runs, heart rate, HRV and sleep then sync automatically, and planned sessions can be sent to the Workout app on your watch.

Does Ranner have an Apple Watch app?

Not a separate one. Ranner puts each session into Apple's own Workout app, so you start it like any other workout and get the watch's full tracking. The run then flows back into Ranner through Apple Health.
