The best AI running coach for Strava users

Strava records your runs brilliantly but doesn't plan them. Here's how the Strava + Runna bundle compares with coaching apps that read your Strava data, and what Ranner does with it.

Updated Roberto Kalinovskyy, founder of Ranner

Strava is where runs get recorded, shared and given kudos. What it doesn't do on its own is tell you what to run tomorrow. Strava's answer is Runna, which it bought in 2025; the alternative is a coaching app that reads your Strava history. We make Ranner, which is one of them, so read our part with that in mind.

Short answer

If you want Strava's own solution, the Strava + Runna bundle ($149.99 a year) gives you both apps, working together very smoothly, but no coach you can talk to. If you want a coach that reads your Strava runs, explains itself in a chat and adapts to your sleep and recovery, Ranner does that. For the recovery part, also connect your watch, because Strava doesn't share sleep or HRV.

What Strava can and can't give a coach

Strava shares your activities with connected apps: distance, pace, heart rate, elevation and splits. That's enough for a coach to know what you ran and how hard it was.

It does not share sleep, HRV or resting heart rate, and it can't carry planned workouts to your watch. So a coach that only reads Strava is coaching you on your runs alone. For the full picture, connect your watch or your phone's health data as well. Ranner supports Garmin, Apple Health, COROS, Suunto, Polar, WHOOP, Oura, Health Connect and more alongside Strava.

The options

  • Strava + Runna bundle: $149.99 a year for Strava's subscription plus Runna's structured plans. The obvious pick if you want to stay inside Strava's world, but there's no chat and no sleep or HRV adaptation.
  • Ranner: an AI coach you chat with. It reads your Strava runs, uses your watch's recovery data when you connect it, and sends sessions to Garmin, Apple Watch, COROS, Suunto and Zepp / Amazfit.
  • Running Genie: a chat coach you can sign in to with Strava. English only, with a free tier.
  • Coach Leo: a chat coach that reads Strava, in English and French.
  • TrainAsONE: an algorithmic planner that syncs from Strava, with plans up to ultra distances.

How Ranner works with Strava

  1. Connect Strava in the Ranner app, and the coach can see your runs.
  2. Every new run shows up automatically. The coach reviews it and adjusts what comes next.
  3. Runs recorded in Ranner go to Strava. If you track a run with your phone in the Ranner app, it can be posted to Strava with its route.
  4. A short credit line. When an activity matches a session from your plan, Ranner adds a "Planned with Ranner" line to its Strava description.
  5. Join the club. Ranner runners share their training in the Ranner Strava club.

If you already pay for Strava

You don't have to choose. Keep Strava for recording and the social side, and let a coaching app decide what goes into it. Just follow one plan at a time: if you move to Ranner, pause any Runna plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Strava have a training plan or a coach?

Strava's own subscription focuses on tracking, routes, segments and AI-written summaries of your activities. For training plans, Strava owns Runna and sells a Strava + Runna bundle for $149.99 a year. Other coaching apps, Ranner among them, connect to Strava to read your runs.

What does Ranner do with my Strava data?

Ranner reads your activities from Strava so the coach knows what you ran and how it went. Strava doesn't share sleep or HRV with other apps, so for recovery-based coaching, also connect your watch, Apple Health or Health Connect.

Does Ranner post anything to Strava?

Runs you record in the Ranner app can be posted to Strava with their route. When an activity matches a session from your plan, Ranner adds a short 'Planned with Ranner' line to its description.

Can a coach send workouts to my watch through Strava?

No. Strava doesn't pass planned workouts on to watches. Apps that send workouts, like Ranner and Runna, do it through their own Garmin, COROS, Suunto and Apple Watch connections.
